The Barbet is a medium to large water dog with a dense, curly coat that covers the head in a beard and topknot.  The body is slightly rectangular, and the feet are large and webbed.

A medium water dog with a woolly coat that needs real grooming, a mild voice, and a household that will swim or walk him in any weather.

The Barbet, or French Water Dog, is an old French retriever used in marshes and on waterfowl.  Its name comes from the beard (barbe) on the face.  The coat is curly and woolly rather than silky.  The AKC lists the breed in FSS; the UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.

Temperament

Barbets are typically friendly, people-oriented, and eager to work in water.  They are usually good with children when raised with them.  A bored Barbet will find mud, water, or both.

Training

They learn quickly and enjoy retrieving games.  Keep training upbeat; this is a willing worker, not a stubborn guard dog.

Care and grooming

The curly coat mats if it is not combed to the skin on a regular schedule.  Dry the ears after swimming and do not shave the coat down to the skin if the dog still works in cold water.

Shedding

Low; loose hair is caught in the curls.

Health

Barbets may develop hip dysplasia, ear infections, and progressive retinal atrophy in some lines.  Ask breeders about hip and eye testing.
